Job Description

Make a difference.
Improve the educational experiences and life-chances of our young people.
*This is a shared post working on behalf of both Cambridgeshire County Council & Peterborough City Council*

As part of our innovative programme of work to create opportunities to share and integrate education services across Cambridgeshire County Council & Peterborough City Council, we created a shared Assistant Director for Education Capital and Place Planning role to lead the range of school place planning services and associated infrastructure that we deliver across both authorities. The current post holder is retiring, having achieved great success during their tenure and building a high performing and stable team.

For this key role, we’re looking for an ambitious leader with an excellent track record in delivering across a broad portfolio, with a particular focus on education provision. Reporting to the Director for Education, you will lead on school place planning, capital builds, admissions and attendance, and education safeguarding across both authorities. Key priorities include ensuring school place planning strategies are implemented, maintaining a relentless focus on safeguarding, and ensuring capital projects are delivered successfully.

You will have relevant and extensive leadership experience within an education context and a strong understanding of the role of data in improving educational outcomes. You will have excellent working knowledge of the statutory elements of the role, including school place planning.  With the ability to effectively manage the interests of a wide range of senior stakeholders, you will be able to provide strong leadership both internally managing multi-disciplinary teams, and within the wider education system. To do so you will be an excellent manager and strong communicator, with the ability to build trust and confidence with schools.

You’ll also have high levels of political awareness and sensitivity to allow you to shape and lead services in the interests of two local authorities and make a success of our ongoing shared services programme. This programme will deliver better, more sustainable education services that will ultimately improve educational outcomes for the children of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

The role is fast paced, varied and interesting. The drive to improve the educational experiences and life-chances for young people is shared by everybody, and underpins all that we do. Colleagues consistently go the extra mile and teams work flexibly in order to support each-other which has been particularly evident during the COVID pandemic. It is that ‘team spirit’ that makes working in Peterborough and Cambridgeshire particularly rewarding – as does the high quality of each of the different teams that make up the whole.

Partnership working also extends beyond our own teams, with exciting initiatives already in place. The Director of Education is determined that all pupils across both local authorities receive the best possible education and as AD you will benefit from his strategic thinking, help and guidance.

We’re looking for an inspirational leader to help us create an innovative, outward-looking, data-led, and evidence-based education environment which enables all children in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to thrive.  If you share our passion and ambition, then we’d love to hear from you.
