We believe in Basildon as a place of opportunity where hard work and community contribution are the signposts for success. A Basildon where our children and young people can flourish, enjoying fulfilling and active lives of aspiration and achievement. A Basildon we can all be proud of with a safe, clean public realm, regenerated town centres, high quality public services and outstanding infrastructure. This is our blueprint for Basildon.
We’re looking for a committed Assistant Director, Finance and Governance and Deputy Section 151 Officer to lead the Council’s finance function – including Revenues and Benefits, Commercial and Procurement, and Audit and Risk. You’ll provide high-level financial and governance expertise to the Council’s leadership team, senior officers, and elected councillors – while also leading the strategic development of key finance and governance-related priorities in the portfolio.
Basildon Borough Council is at the forefront of innovation and transformation, committed to delivering outstanding services that make a real difference in the lives of our residents. We are a determined, ambitious, and forward-thinking local authority, driven by a passion for excellence and a determination to be a leader in public service. As a council, we are not just reacting to change—we are actively shaping the future of our community, ensuring that Basildon continues to thrive and grow.
It’s a wide remit and there’s currently a heavy emphasis across the organisation to ensure the finance function aligns with corporate plans, which means you’ll need to both set the direction of travel financially while also supporting other leaders at the Council to deliver their priorities. You’ll manage a strong team, developing talented middle managers into more senior roles to strengthen the organisation. You’ll work across ambitious project work at the organisation, collaborating with developers, NHS, and the county council to ensure service delivery, income generation, value for money and the delivery of Council priorities and outcomes.
This is a brilliant opportunity for an experienced finance leader to maintain and build financial stability and profitability, create a culture of collaboration within the Council, and ultimately drive our Borough forward.
Closing date: Sunday 29th September at Midnight
