Job Description

Can you make our ambitions a reality?

We have bold ambitions for the district and the role of Chief Executive is integral in making this a reality. Our current Chief Executive is stepping down in March after a successful tenure and we’re looking for new leadership to move us into the next phase of Lancaster district’s exciting future.

The district is a beautiful place to live, work and visit, boasting incredible architecture and heritage. Lancaster is the country’s cosmopolitan and cultural capital, with both Edinburgh and London within 2.5 hours journey time as well as Manchester, Liverpool close by. Reasonable house prices, great schools, beautiful countryside and the opportunity to live in an area steeped in history means that we’re attracting those seeking a better quality of life.

We have a growing economy and are in the process of refreshing our ambitions for the district. This role offers you an opportunity to achieve significant progress for the Council and the region. Exciting developments are on the horizon, with plans to develop the Canal Quarter into a diverse residential, commercial, cultural, and recreational neighbourhood. And the prospect of Eden Project North in Morecambe which is predicted to attract around one million visits a year and directly employ more than 40 people.

As Chief Executive, you will relish the opportunity to move at pace and get things done. You will focus on partnerships, shaping and crafting strategies and policies that are impactful, and work to secure funding that will create the best conditions for the economy to thrive.

We walk the talk on sustainability and carbon reduction, and we will want you to build on the good work we’ve achieved to date. Having currently overseen the roll out of an electric fleet and the development of a 1.6-megawatt solar power station (that will power a leisure centre), we are passionate about doing everything we can to get to net zero.

Our people and residents are the heart of what we do, and the successful candidate will be passionate about listening to residents, working with elected members, and enhancing the Council and district’s brand and reputation.
If you want to make a difference and really put the district on the map, we would love to hear from you.

To apply for this role, please submit an up-to-date copy of your CV, along with a supporting statement (four pages maximum) that addresses the criteria set out in the job description and uses examples to demonstrate how you meet the essential requirements.

Your applications must include:

  • Your full contact details;

  • Names, positions, organisations and contact details for two referees (we will ask your permission before contacting referees);

  • Details of your current salary and notice period;

  • Notification of any dates when you are not available for interview.

Once your application has been submitted, you will receive a response to confirm that it has been received. If you do not receive this response, please contact us to let us know.
