Job Description

Working together for a better borough

St Helens Borough is undergoing a transformation; not just in the regeneration of our towns and the economic growth in our key industries, but we have also undergone substantial change as a council. We have energetic officer and political leadership which is determined to get things done; and have undergone a council wide restructure with a renewed impetus on performance and outcomes for local people, something that was positively highlighted in our recent LGA Corporate Peer Revisit, and further supported by our recent shortlisting in a national award for Most Improved Council.  We are a council with high ambitions, a place that is full of energy and focus, with a passionate and committed workforce and an exciting future ahead.

As set out in our St Helens Borough Strategy 2030, our top priority is to make a difference to the lives of children and young people who live in the borough. To do so we need to improve outcomes for all children, whilst tackling deprivation and child poverty and protecting children from vulnerable backgrounds.

St Helens Borough is a place we’re extremely proud of. It’s beautifully green, hosts a variety of leisure activities, with excellent schools, an affordable housing market and great connectivity, being ideally located halfway between the cities of Liverpool and Manchester.

We’re recruiting a Director of Children & Young Peoples Services to lead our improvement journey and drive-up outcomes for children and young people in St Helens. This vital role will play a key part in the council’s senior leadership team. The postholder will be responsible for the full range of services to the children & young people of the borough, including education, early help, youth justice and children’s social care. As the statutory DCS, you will drive our children’s social care improvement journey, supported by the council’s senior leadership team, political leaders, and Cabinet.

We’re seeking an inspirational leader with significant senior management experience within local government children’s services. You’ll have a proven track record and a passion for making a positive difference and improving outcomes for children. You’ll also have excellent partnership skills, a strong political understanding, and the ability to deliver results and find solutions.

This is an exceptional opportunity to join a vibrant and energetic senior leadership team, for someone who wants to make a real difference to the children, young people and families across our borough.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Chris Barrow on 07437 839048 / chris.barrow@tile-hill.co.uk, Nik Shah on 07535 400434/nik.shah@tile-hill.co.uk or Anita Denton on 07725 554802 / anita.denton@tile-hill.co.uk.

Closing date: Midnight on Friday 13th May 2022
