Job Description

Building a healthier, happier, better connected and more prosperous West Midlands.
About us
At the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), everything we do is focused on making life better for the people of the West Midlands – that’s our reason for existence and is at the core of everything we do. The WMCA is a partnership of 18 local authorities and three Local Enterprise Partnerships. Together, our mission is to lead and support others to deliver our shared future vision for the region – to be a happier, healthier and better connected place to live and work.
Based in the centre of the country and at the heart of the UK’s transport network, the West Midlands is an area that plays a vital role in the levelling up agenda as the country emerges from COVID-19. The WMCA’s role across the region has never been more important and, as a collective, we’ve shown that we can step forward, speak up for our region and bring people together.
About the role
At this point in our history, we seek a Director of Law & Governance to provide strategic leadership across the Combined Authority and its partner organisations to create modern and innovative legal and governance services. You will act as the Council’s solicitor and principal legal adviser and discharge the statutory duties of the Monitoring Officer, ensuring the Combined Authority fulfils its lawful obligations and statutory duties and performs its functions and activities in accordance with the law.
Supported by a growing team of technical experts, you will be expected to continue to review WMCA’s governance arrangements, working in partnership with our Members and local politicians to make improvements to our practice. Importantly, as Director you will develop and enhance the effectiveness of our procurement processes across major programmes of work, including large-scale transport, housing and regeneration projects, ensuring the Combined Authority receives the best value for money in a safe and legal manner.
As a qualified solicitor with extensive experience of leading first class legal and governance services in a local government context, you will lead WMCA to success in this new chapter and create a legacy of excellence. Experience of developing and supporting multi-skilled teams in a fast-paced environment will be fundamental to this role.
Our values and commitment
We’re committed to creating an accessible and diverse workplace; one that nurtures an inclusive environment where our people can be themselves. We are a “Leaders in Diversity” accredited organisation, are in the Inclusive Top 50 Employers List and are one of The Times Top 50 Employers for Women. As a Disability Confident Employer, we have made a positive commitment to interviewing all applicants with a disability who meet the essential role criteria. We are committed to developing an organisation that is representative of the diverse communities that we serve and welcome applications from young people, Black, Asian and ethnic minority groups and women at senior levels.
Our core values are to be collaborative, innovative, driven and inclusive. If your values align with ours and you’re committed to working towards creating a future that we can all be proud of, we want to hear from you.
