Job Description

Come and make your mark and improve the lives of our children and young people

At Medway Council we have bold ambitions for the future across everything we do. We are ambitious for our children and young people to ensure they have the very best start in life and can achieve their full potential. We are on a big improvement journey in Children’s Services, and whilst progress has been made, we still face a number of challenges, particularly around the quality and consistency of practice and placement management.

We have taken the decision to split the Head of Corporate Parenting into two roles in order to add extra senior management capacity and help accelerate our improvement journey. Reporting to Donna Marriot, Assistant Director Children’s Social Care, you’ll provide strategic leadership, vision and direction within our Children in Care Service, ensuring practice and values deliver positive outcomes for children, young people and their families. As a strategic leader in Medway, you‘ll  work closely with the Assistant Director, newly created Head of Provider Services, and the rest of the Children’s Services Management Team to truly transform services and improve outcomes. You’ll also work closely with our key partners across education, health and police to influence across the system.

A qualified social worker, you’ll be a collaborative team player with the ability to build and sustain strong staff teams.  You’ll also have extensive management experience including change management, and a track record of successfully managing service budgets. You’ll be politically astute and have experience of working closely with elected Members. We are looking for someone with excellent leadership skills, with a can-do attitude, a nurturing and coaching leadership style, who can take staff with them on the journey ahead.

Over the past 2 years, more people than ever have realised the value of their surroundings and where they live and work. At Medway we are spoilt with plenty of green spaces, excellent facilities and fantastic transport links to the rest of the country, including London. We also recognise that the world has changed and encourage hybrid approaches where possible. As a Council we really value and empower our staff and celebrate their success.

This a fantastic opportunity to be part of our journey and make your mark, working alongside talented, professional colleagues to drive forward change and transform the lives of our residents and the communities they live in. Officers and Members have a relentless focus on improvement, and we are truly approaching this as a whole system.

If you possess the skills and experience, we seek, are excited by the unique blend of challenge and opportunity, and share our passion for improving the lives of our children and young people, we would love to hear from you.
