About the Council
Stevenage is a thriving town full of opportunities for our communities, led by an innovative Council. Our motto is “the heart of the town lies in its people” and with everything from world-class R&D companies to our four award-winning Green Flag parks, our people are at the heart of what we do.
We are an ambitious Council with a reputation for punching above our weight, with a corporate mission to make Stevenage Even Better. We aim to become a destination town of the future. With a £1billion regeneration programme underway, we have also recently secured £37.5m of further funding through the Stevenage Town Investment Plan to regenerate the town centre, making this an exciting time to join Stevenage Borough Council.
As local government continues to face the challenges of reduced funding and the financial impact of COVID-19, we want to maintain rather than reduce our services, continuing to deliver the things that matter most to our residents and to us. We do this through strong leadership, a focused strategy and strong financial management, but with a realistic view of our future challenges.
About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Head of Technical Accounting to join and lead the technical side of our accountancy team. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the Statement of Accounts production, government returns and supporting both the budget setting and capital budget monitoring process. The postholder is also responsible for providing technical support to the accountancy team and wider council officers.
The role of the Head of Technical Accounting is to ensure that expert financial advice is given to all Assistant Directors and Service Managers, enabling the Council to meet its ambitions. Working closely with the Assistant Director of Finance & Estates and senior officers, you will help promote financial sustainability across the Council through effective leadership and partnership working to optimise key opportunities across the borough.
To be successful, you will need to be a qualified accountant (ACA, CIMA, ACCA, CIPFA). With strong relationship building skills and the ability to lead and motivate a team through excellent communication, you will work collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders. Experience in local government is preferable but not essential.
The ambition of the Council makes Stevenage a rewarding place to work, providing the opportunity to develop new skills and broaden your work experience.
For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Helen Anderson(07437 839048) or Anita Denton (07725 554802).
Closing date: Midnight on Sunday 10th October 2021
Interviews will be held: Thursday 21st October (PM) and Friday 22nd October (AM) 2021
