Trailblazer: Alison Stuart
As part of our Trailblazers: Women Transforming the Public Sector and Beyond series, we’re continuing to spotlight women making a meaningful impact across public service leadership.
In this feature, we hear from Alison Stuart, Director of Law and Governance and Monitoring Officer at the London Borough of Islington. Alison reflects on her journey into senior leadership, the importance of using your voice with confidence and empathy, and how diverse leadership can inspire others and strengthen the community’s public services support.
What’s your proudest career achievement so far?
My proudest career achievement so far has been my role as Director of Law and Governance. It has been incredibly fulfilling to contribute to service transformation, create new initiatives and mentor and support individuals from different backgrounds which I always aspired to do. It has opened up opportunities to meet grow and develop a strong network of female leaders of different specialisms who support and inspire me to be myself every day.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to women aspiring to leadership positions?
Use your voice effectively and be unafraid to speak up empathetically and with impact in the face of challenges whatever those may be. You have the same right as everyone else to be at the table and be heard.
How do you think having more women in senior leadership benefits public services and the communities they serve?
Diversity in leadership is a powerful motivator for others to bring different perspectives for the benefit of communities. It fosters a diverse and inclusive workplace where people can see and believe in what is possible through determination.
What motivates you most about working in public service?
Finding solutions to benefit communities despite increasing challenges and doing so with our residents at the forefront of our decision making.
