The value they bring in terms of efficiency, savings, and expertise far outweighs the initial investment. Compared to consultancies, interims are significantly more cost-effective. Consultants from large firms often involve teams of people working on broad projects, with higher fees and no personal accountability. Often with generic skill sets that have never been tested in the real world of the NHS. In contrast, an interim is a specialist who works directly for the organisation, focusing on clear, achievable goals.

 Healthcare often relies heavily on talent from within its own ecosystem, but looking beyond NHS talent pools can yield transformative results. Interim leaders with cross-sector experience bring fresh ideas and innovative approaches from industries such as digital, data and technology, finance, or HR/OD. For short-term, focused projects—such as reforming operational processes or implementing new systems—NHS-specific experience isn’t always necessary.

 Interim leadership in healthcare is an underutilised resource that has the potential to drive meaningful transformation and reform. By challenging the stigma surrounding interim managers and recognising their unique strengths, the NHS and other healthcare organisations can unlock significant value. Interims are not temporary stopgaps or costly consultants; they are strategic assets who bring expertise, fresh perspectives, and measurable results.
