Job Description
The Assistant Director, Environment is a new senior role that has been created within our Place directorate to support and deliver our ambitious programme of change.
In this high profile position you will work closely with senior leaders, elected Members and partners to ensure that that requirements of the new Environment Act 2021 are embedded into service delivery.
The Council has committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and in this role you will set the strategic direction for the Climate Team, as we aim to be a role model in our response to the climate emergency, embedding a whole Council approach, liaising with portfolio holders and cabinet members, to raise awareness and understanding of the actions required to deliver on our goal and secure the best future for our residents.
Importantly, you will also provide strategic direction for Waste Management, one of the Council’s highest profile services. You’ll develop our future waste strategy and ensure that the necessary infrastructure is in place to meet demand. You will be the senior responsible officer for the waste management and recycling contracts, utilising your procurement experience as well as strong contract management partnership, and negotiation skills.
In addition, you will have responsibility for our Public Protection services, working closely with Public Health, to ensure our communities remain safe; and our Natural and Historic Environment team, aiming to protect and enhance the environment and our World Heritage Sites at Stonehenge and Avebury.
We are looking for an individual with the commitment and ambition to lead and develop our efforts to tackle climate change and respond proactively to changes in Environmental Policy, ensuring an innovative response through effective collaboration with our communities within a highly political environment.
If you think you have the leadership, skills and knowledge, together with the drive and commitment to help Wiltshire meet our ambition, we would love to hear from you.
